What insurance does a trucker or transport business need?
A trucker or transport business usually needs several coverages: primary liability, which for interstate hauling of general freight must meet the FMCSA federal minimum of $750,000; cargo insurance for the freight; physical damage for your truck and trailer; and non-trucking liability (bobtail) for when you drive off dispatch. If you have employees you also need workers compensation. The legal minimum depends on what you haul and whether you operate within or beyond your state. We never invent prices: cost depends on your experience, routes, cargo type and equipment value. At TOP Insurance we compare 30+ insurers, work with owner operators and fleets, accept ITIN and serve you in Spanish; you get your quote online and a licensed agent finalizes it with you.

What trucking and transport insurance covers
Trucking insurance combines several coverages that protect your truck, your cargo and your legal liability on the road. An owner operator with a single truck and a local delivery fleet have different needs, and the policy should reflect them.
- Primary liability: covers injuries and damage you cause to others; it is mandatory to operate.
- Cargo insurance: pays for the freight you haul if it is damaged or lost in a covered event.
- Physical damage: repairs or replaces your own truck, tractor and trailer after collision, theft or fire.
- Non-trucking liability (bobtail): protects you when driving the truck without a load and off dispatch.
- Workers compensation: covers injuries to your drivers and staff when you have employees.
FMCSA and DOT federal requirements
Interstate trucking is regulated by the FMCSA. For general freight crossing state lines, the federal liability minimum is $750,000; for certain hazardous materials the minimum is much higher. You need your USDOT number and, in many cases, operating authority (MC).
The BMC-91 form or equivalent filing proves to the FMCSA that you meet the liability minimum. Your agent coordinates it with the insurer so you keep your authority active.
State-by-state facts where we operate
Beyond federal rules, each state has its own requirements for intrastate trucking and for workers compensation of your drivers. We serve Georgia, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana and South Carolina, and tailor the policy to each state's rules.
- Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana and South Carolina: auto minimums of 25/50/25; workers comp required based on each state's employee count.
- Texas: auto minimums of 30/60/25; workers comp is voluntary, but many freight brokers require it before assigning loads.
- Florida: no-fault system with PIP; for construction and certain sectors workers comp applies from the first employee.
How to save on your trucking insurance
Trucking insurance is one of a trucker's biggest expenses. These practices help lower the cost without falling below what the law requires.
- Keep a clean driving record and CSA score: claims and violations raise the premium.
- Choose physical-damage deductibles you can afford in a loss.
- Bundle trucks into a fleet policy as you grow; it is usually cheaper per unit.
- Let an agent compare several trucking-focused insurers at every renewal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Verificamos tu caso.
¿Cuánto cuesta el seguro para transporte?▼
No inventamos precios.
