What does boat insurance cover?

Boat insurance covers physical damage to your vessel, motor and trailer (collision, fire, theft or storms, depending on the policy) and liability if you injure someone or damage another boat or property. You can also add medical payments, uninsured boater, towing and personal effects. Homeowners policies usually have low limits or exclude boats and jet skis, so a separate policy is often worth it. At TOP Insurance we compare 30+ carriers in Georgia and 6 more states.

If you own a boat, runabout, pontoon or jet ski, here we explain in plain language what boat insurance covers, why your homeowners policy probably falls short and what affects the price. At TOP Insurance we compare options with you, in Spanish or English.

What does boat insurance cover?

A boat policy combines two main protections: one that covers your vessel (physical damage) and one that protects you if you cause harm to other people or their property (liability). On top of that you can add optional coverages based on how and where you go out on the water.

  • Physical damage: collisions, capsizing, fire, theft, vandalism and storms, depending on the policy.
  • Liability: injuries to other people or damage to other boats, docks or property.
  • Medical payments: care for you and your passengers after an accident.
  • Uninsured boater: if an uninsured boater injures you.
  • Towing and on-water assistance, personal effects and trailer (optional).

Which watercraft we can insure

We work with carriers that cover most recreational watercraft: runabouts, fishing boats, pontoons, ski and wakeboard boats, small sailboats and personal watercraft (jet skis). Each carrier has its own rules on size, speed, age and use, which is why we compare several options for your case.

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?

Many homeowners policies offer little or no protection for boats: they usually have low limits, cover only small vessels, or exclude damage away from your property and liability on the water. Jet skis and boats with powerful motors are usually excluded.

Review your policy or send it to us: we will tell you what it covers and whether a separate boat policy makes sense.

Agreed value vs. actual cash value

With agreed value, you and the insurer set the boat value when you buy the policy and, in a total loss, that amount is paid (minus the deductible). With actual cash value, the market value at the time of the loss is paid, which drops with depreciation. Agreed value usually costs more but gives more certainty.

Is boat insurance required?

State laws on boat insurance vary, and in many cases it is not required by law. Even so, it is very common for the lender (if you financed the boat), the marina where you keep it, or some lakes and events to require it. And without liability coverage you could pay out of pocket for an accident with injuries.

Boat registration and boater education rules are set by each state. In Georgia they are administered by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR); confirm your requirement before going out on the water.

What affects the price?

Price depends on the type, size, age, value and engine power, where you boat and store it, your experience and record, the deductible and the coverages you choose. Some carriers offer discounts for boating safety courses or for bundling with your auto or home policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is boat insurance required in Georgia?▼

Laws vary by state and in many cases boat insurance is not required by law. However, the lender that financed your boat, the marina or some lakes and events often require it. Confirm registration and education requirements with Georgia DNR.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my boat?▼

Usually very little: many homeowners policies have low limits, only cover small vessels or exclude damage away from your property and liability on the water. Jet skis are almost always excluded. Send us your policy and we will review it.

Do you insure jet skis and personal watercraft?▼

Yes. We work with carriers that cover personal watercraft (jet skis) with physical damage, liability and other optional coverages.

Which is better: agreed value or actual cash value?▼

Agreed value pays the amount set when you bought the policy in a total loss; actual cash value pays market value after depreciation. The first usually costs more but gives more certainty. We walk you through both quotes so you can decide.

Does the policy cover other people driving my boat?▼

Many policies cover operators with your permission, but rules vary by carrier (for example, age or experience). Tell us who will operate the boat so we can quote correctly.

Is my trailer covered on the road?▼

The boat trailer can be included in the boat policy. Liability while towing usually comes from your auto policy. We review both policies so there are no gaps.

What information do I need for a quote?▼

Type of watercraft, make, model, year, length, engine type and horsepower, approximate value, where you store and use it, and who will operate it. If financed, the lender details.

Can I bundle boat insurance with my auto or home?▼

Many carriers offer discounts for bundling policies. Because we compare 30+ carriers, we look for the combination that works best for you.

In which states do you offer boat insurance?▼

We serve clients in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana and Texas, subject to each carrier’s availability. We have offices in Duluth, Lawrenceville and Gainesville (Georgia).
